An array type inkjet printer and a maintenance method thereof are provided to reduce the amount of ink used for maintenance work by performing a spitting process adaptively according to the use frequency of a nozzle. An array type inkjet printer comprises a head(6) having a plurality of nozzles. A discharge number calculation unit(21) calculates the discharge frequency of each nozzle. A cap open time calculation unit(30) accumulatively calculates the open time of a cap(7) which opens and closes discharge holes of each nozzle. When the calculated open time reaches a predetermined value, a controller(10) allows maintenance work to be performed on the nozzle that represents discharge frequency below a predetermined discharge frequency for a certain period of time.
