PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can suppress a rise in temperature of a light emitting element while preventing the manufacturing cost and weight from increasing by efficiently radiating heat of the light emitting element by simple constitution, and also can perform a high-precision read, and an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: A copying machine 10 is equipped with: a light irradiating means 50 including a plurality of light emitting diodes 43 provided in a horizontal scanning direction of an original and irradiating the original with light and a circuit board 51 driving the light emitting diodes 43; a support member 52 with the light irradiating means 50 fitted thereto; and a first carriage 35 with the support member 52 fitted thereto and traveling in a sub-scanning direction of the original. The copying machine is further equipped with a guide member 53 which guides air to the light irradiating means 50 when the first carriage 35 travels. Further, an oblique directional upper-end portion of a first mirror 44a is made to abut against the support member 52 via a lower-end portion of a base part 35a of the first carriage, then, the first mirror 44a may be used as a guide member.
