PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner which maintains stable operation by preventing a refrigerant from being retained in an indoor unit. SOLUTION: The air conditioner wherein one or more indoor units 3 each having an indoor heat exchanger 27 and an indoor expansion valve 29 are connected to one or more outdoor units 1 each having a compressor 5, an outdoor heat exchanger 13 and an outdoor expansion valve 17, comprises one or more predicting means provided in at least one of the one or more outdoor units to predict the occurrence of a gas shortage; a control means for performing control of discharging the refrigerant retained in the indoor heat exchanger in the standstill indoor unit by opening/closing the indoor expansion valve in the standstill indoor unit stepwise in predetermined opening units every predetermined cycle when the standstill indoor unit exists in the case of predicting the occurrence of the gas shortage by at least one of the one or more predicting means during heating operation; and a regulating means for regulating the predetermined opening units of the control means according to the state of the indoor expansion valve of the standstill indoor unit.
