A coating of a synthetic resin or natural rubber is united to a polyolefine by effecting interfacial cross-linking by heating or irradiating the coated polyolefine while an additional substance capable of forming free radicals is present at the interface between the coating and the polyolefin. The process may be applied to polyolefins, especially polyethylene, prepared by either a high or low-pressure polymerization process. The coating may be a polyolefin, chlorinated and sulphochlorinated polyethylene, polyisobutylene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloroacetate, polyvinyl propionate, polyesters, polyamides, natural rubber, butadiene-acrylonitrile, butadiene-styrene, neoprene, polyacrylic acid, polyacrylic esters, polyacrylonitrile, silicones, polystyrene, alkyd resins, copolymers of vinyl chloride and other vinyl monomers or acrylic monomers, and also cyclohexanone resins and melamine resins. The free radical forming substance may be applied to the base together with the coating, or before or after application of the coating to the base. Substances specified include organic peroxides such as diacyl and dialkyl peroxides, hydrogen peroxide, inorganic peroxides soluble in organic solvents and water, organic per-acids and peresters, N-chloro derivatives of amines and amides, amino-oxides, and hydrazine salts and derivatives.
