PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of cleaning a print head without adding a new structure, and cleaning a foreign object which is not able to be melted by heating. SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus (thermal transfer printer) comprises an apparatus body including a print head 2 provided to be rotated between a printing position where the print head 2 is pressed against a platen roller 3 and a non-printing position (separated position) where the print head 2 is separated from the platen roller 3, and an ink cartridge 23 which is detachably attached to the apparatus body and is adapted to accommodate an ink sheet 32 to be inserted between the print head 2 and the platen roller 3 when printing. When it is detected that the ink sheet 32 reaches its rear end, the print head 2 is rotated between the printing position and the non-printing position (separated position) to allow a foreign object adhering the print head 2 to fall on the ink sheet 32, thereby performing the cleaning of the print head 2.
