The bearing unit (1) has an outer ring (5) attached into a recess (17) of a hub ring (3), and an inner ring (7) attached into the outer ring. A set of truncated cone shaped rolling units (31) is arranged between the inner ring and the outer ring. The outer ring has an outer partial ring (9) with a stop unit (13) and another outer partial ring (11) with the same stop unit, where the stop unit of the outer partial rings and an elevation of the recess of the hub ring are arranged opposite to each other. The recess is designed as a step drill. An independent claim is also included for a method for installing a hub bearing unit.
