<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a main part of a casing for any of an outboard motor with a torque converter and an outboard motor with no torque converter. <P>SOLUTION: In the outboard motor, the torque converter T; a vertical placement type output shaft 20 connected to a crank shaft 17 through it; a propeller shaft 3 horizontally arranged below the output shaft 20; a forward advancement/retreating switch gear mechanism 21 for connecting the output shaft 20 and the propeller shaft 3 are arranged in a casing 1 detachably mounting an engine E on an upper part. The casing 1 is constituted by casing main bodies 10-12 for storing the output shaft 20, the propeller shaft 3 and the forward advancement/retreating switch gear mechanism 21; and distance members 13, 15 detachably bonded to upper ends of the casing main bodies 10-12 and storing the torque converter T.
