SOLUTION: An apparatus for controlling an engine calculates a differential rotation speedΔNe from the difference between the engine rotation speed Ne which is calculated based on a signal from a crank angle sensor 32 and the engine rotation speed Nef after filtering which is calculated based on the signal after filtering the signal from the crank angle sensor 32 by means of a filter for damping the resonance frequency components of the drive system (S21). and then calculates an ignition timing correcting quantity "adv_a" for damping the vibrations of the drive system based on the differential rotation speedΔNe (S25). Then, the final ignition timing "adv" is set by adding the ignition timing correcting quantity "adv_a" to the reference ignition timing "adv_base" set based on the engine rotation speed Nef after filtering and a reference fuel injection quantity Tp.
