Anhydrous monomethylhydrazine is obtained by fractionally distilling at atmospheric pressure an aqueous composition containing about 10-36% by weight of monomethylhydrazine admixed with sufficient caustic soda to provide a molar ratio of caustic soda to water in the charge of from about 0,1:1 to 0,3:1, the anhydrous product being recovered overhead. The aqueous composition preferably comprises the ozeotrope containing 32-36% by weight of monomethylhydrazine and the caustic soda may be fed to the still as an aqueous solution of 20-75% by weight strength.
