The invention relates to a device (1) for interrupting an electrical alternating current, which is driven by a high voltage, with contact pieces (5, 6) that are connected to conductors (4, 7, 9, 10) and placed inside a contact housing. The conductors (4, 7, 9, 10) are guided in an at least partially displaceable manner, and the contact pieces (5, 6) can be transferred from a contact position into a non-contact position by means of a drive and of drive kinematics. The aim of the invention is to provide a switching device of the aforementioned type with which even higher currents can also be controlled. To this end, a heat tube (11, 12) with a fluid-tight heat tube housing (14) is provided, which has an evaporation area (15), a condensation area (16), and a capillary structure (20) extending between the evaporation area (15) and the condensation area (16) and being thermally coupled to both of them. The heat tube (14) has a heat transfer means, and the evaporation area (15) is connected in a heat-conducting manner to one of the conductors (4, 7, 9, 10) or to one of the contact pieces (5, 6).
