The present invention is concerned with aryl-4-ethynyl-isoxazole derivati ves of formula (I) wherein R1 to R5 are as described in the specification, R 5 representing an optionally substituted aryl or heteroaryl. It has been fou nd that this class of compounds show high affinity and selectivity for GABA A .alpha.5 receptor binding sites, being useful as cognitive enhancer or for the treatment of cognitive disorders like Alzheimer's disease.
