摘要 <p>#CMT# #/CMT# A plant having within its genome at least one allele of a gene that confers resistance to Tomato torrado virus (ToTV), the virus having been deposited with the Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH on 24 November 2004 under depositors reference number ToTV-E01 (DSM 16999). #CMT# : #/CMT# Independent claims are: (1) a plant part derived from the plant above; (2) a method for selecting a plant that is resistant to the ToTV; (3) a method for selecting a plant having within its genome at least one allele of a gene that confers resistance to the ToTV; (4) a method for producing a plant; (5) a plant obtainable by the method above; and (6) a plant part derived from a plant of (5). #CMT#USE : #/CMT# The allele that confers resistance against ToTV is useful for selecting ToTV resistant tomato plants, or conferring resistance to ToTV in a ToTV susceptible tomato variety by increasing the frequency of the presence of the resistant allele in the variety. The ToTV resistant plant is useful for enhancing the yield of and/or for preventing yield loss in the plant resulting from ToTV infection, where the ToTV resistant plant is characterized by the homozygous presence of the allele located in a genomic region linked to AFLP markers on chromosome 4 of tomato. The seed of a ToTV resistant plant is useful for producing a ToTV resistant plant or for preventing the occurrence of torrado disease (or a related disease such as marchitez or chocolate spot disease) in a plant or in a population of plants. The plant comprising at least one allele that confers resistance to ToTV, or that is homozygous for an allele that confers resistance to ToTV, is useful as a ToTV resistant tomato plant or as a parent plant in breeding programs aimed at providing other plants with the ToTV resistant phenotype that results from the homozygous presence of the allele. The AFLP markers are useful for detecting the presence of an allele that confers resistance to ToTV in a plant (all claimed). #CMT#BIOTECHNOLOGY : #/CMT# Preferred Plant/Plant Part: The plant is a plant of the family Solanaceae, more preferably a tomato plant. The plant is a plant of the species Solanum lycopersicum. The allele is located in a genomic region linked to AFLP markers P14/M49-F-282, P11/M35-F-216, P21/M61-F-583, P25/M51-F-131, P15/M49-F-330, P13/M38-F-311/313 and/or COSII/CAPS marker C2-At5925900, preferably to AFLP markers P14/M49-F-282, P11/M35-F-216 and/or P13/M38-F-311/313, most preferably to AFLP markers P11/M35-F-216 and/or P13/M38-F-311/313 and/or COSII/CAPS marker C2-At5925900. The allele is located on chromosome 4, preferably in a genomic region positioned between AFLP markers P14/M49-F-282 and P11/M35-F-216, even more preferably between AFLP marker P13/M38-F-311/313 and COSII/CAPS marker C2-At5925900. The allele is present in homozygous form. The resistance is expressed as a resistance to the establishment of an infection. The plant is identified in a resistance bioassay involving infection with the ToTV above, optionally followed by a method involving screening for the presence of at least one molecular marker linked to the allele of the ToTV resistance gene. The plant part is a fruit or seed. Preferred Method: Selecting a plant that is resistant to the ToTV comprises providing an inoculum of the virus, exposing a plant to the inoculum, allowing for a sufficient incubation time, and selecting the plant in case no infection establishes in the plant upon lapse of the incubation time. Selecting a plant having within its genome at least one allele of a gene that confers resistance to the ToTV comprises screening the genomic DNA of a plant for the presence of a genomic region linked to AFLP markers P14/M49-F-282, P11/M35-F-216, P21/M61-F-583, P25/M51-F-131, P15/M49-F-330, and/or P13/M38-F-311/313 and/or COSII/CAPS marker C2-At5g25900, preferably to AFLP markers P14/M49-F-282, P 11/M35-F-216 and/or P13/M38-F-311/313 and/or COSII/CAPS marker C2-At5925900, most preferably to AFLP markers P 11/M35-F-216 and/or P 13/M38-F-311/313 and/or COSII/CAPS marker C2-At5925900. Producing a plant comprising selecting a plant having within its genome at least one allele of a gene that confers resistance to the ToTV by performing the method above and crossing the selected plant with itself or another plant to produce seed, and growing the seed into a plant. Producing a plant that is resistant to the ToTV comprises: (A) selecting a plant having within its genome at least one allele of a gene that confers resistance to the ToTV by performing the method above; (B) crossing the selected plant with another plant or with itself to produce seed; (C) growing the seed into plants to produce offspring plants; (D) optionally repeating the crossing and growing steps of steps (b) and (c); and (E) selecting from amongst the offspring plants a plant where the allele is present in homozygous form. Selection in step (e) is performed by screening the DNA of the offspring plant for the homozygous presence of the genomic region linked to AFLP markers P14/M49-F-282, P 11/M35-F-216, P21/M61-F-583, P25/M51-F-131, P15/M49-F-330, and/or P13/M38-F-311/313 and/or COSII/CAPS marker C2-At5g25900, preferably to AFLP markers P14/M49-F-282, P 11/M35-F-216 and/or P 13/M38-F-311/313 and/or COSII/CAPS marker C2 At5g25900, most preferably to AFLP markers PllfM35-F-216 and/or P13/M38-F-311/313 and/or COSII/CAPS marker C2-At5g25900.
