A process for production of a piperidine compound having a syn-configuration represented by the general formula [I] or a salt thereof, comprising reducing a compound represented by the general formula [II]. [I] wherein the solid bold line represents such a bond that each of the substituents at position-2 and position-4 in the piperidine ring can have a syn-configuration; and other variable symbols are as defined above. [II] wherein the ring A represents a benzene ring which may have a substituent; R<SUP>2</SUP> represents a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group which may have a substituent, an amino group which may have a substituent, an alkyl groupwhich may have a substituent, a carbonyl group which has a substituent, or a halogen atom; and M represents an alkali metal or a hydrogen atom.
