PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a resistance type oxygen sensor element having no output temperature dependency at low temperatures by reducing the resistance at the interfaces between a temperature compensating material and its electrodes at low temperatures. SOLUTION: In the resistance type oxygen sensor element using both the temperature compensating material and a gas detection material, (1) the resistance at the interfaces between the temperature compensating material and its electrodes is made smaller than the resistance of the temperature compensating material, and (2) the output range of the oxygen sensor that does not depend on temperature spreads to the low-temperature side to 600°C. The resistance type oxygen sensor element uses the temperature compensating material of a composition of Ce<SB>0.5</SB>Y<SB>0.5</SB>O<SB>2</SB>and the gas detection material of a composition of Ce<SB>0.9</SB>Zr<SB>0.1</SB>O<SB>2</SB>. The temperature compensating material is porous. The electrodes of the temperature compensating material are dense electrodes. The positional relation between the temperature compensating material and its electrodes has the relation among a substrate; the electrodes; and the temperature compensating material.
