N-propargylbenzylamines and their preparation

The invention comprises N-propargylbenzylamine, N-propargyl-a -phenylethylamine, their non-toxic salts, and a process for the preparation of compounds of the general formula:- (in which one R represents hydrogen or methyl and the other represents hydrogen) by refluxing an amine C6H5.CHR.NHR with propargyl bromide in anhydrous ethanol and in the presence of a hydrohalide acceptor, e.g. anhydrous sodium carbonate, until the reaction is complete, removing the excess hydrohalide acceptor and ethanol, extracting the residue with dry ether and isolating the desired compound from the ethereal solution. Examples detail the preparation of N-propargylbenzylamine, its N-methyl derivative, N-propargyl-a -phenylethylamine and their hydrochloride salts.
