PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine whether or not articles arranged on display racks have expired by reading character information representing the expiration date, and issues an alarm if any articles have expired. SOLUTION: An expiration date check device comprises a two-dimensional CCD reading part 6 for reading characters indicating an expiration date of an article, an information transmission/reception device 9 for transmitting and receiving information to and from an external server 14 recording expiration date information on the article, a date/time recognition device 10 for comparing the expiration date information read by the reading part 6 with the expiration date information on the article recorded in the external server 14 to determine whether or not it has expired, an alarm device 11 for issuing an alarm if the article has expired, and a display part 12 for displaying the expiration date read and the alarm by the alarm device.
