PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obviate heating up of a non-paper feeding portion due to the kinds, sizes, etc., of a recording material to be fed to a fixing unit, and intricate control arising due to the same, and lowering of the number of the paper to be fed. SOLUTION: The fixing unit includes a plurality of heating elements varying in specifications and changes the heating elements according to the recording medium to be fed. At this time, the switching of the heating elements is performed in the state of releasing the pressure of the fixing unit, so that damages are not given to a fixing film and the heating elements. Also, the conveyance of the recording material and the fixing pressurization is switched by switching the forward and backward operation of a motor for conveying the recording material.
