It is possible to display a high-contrast image by actively using fluctuations of a color component and a luminance component which are difficult to be perceived by an observer. An original image is inputted (step S1), and when the original image is converted into a Yxy value (step S2), a physical luminance range is set (step S11), a luminance range based on a color threshold value is extended (step S12), and a luminance range based on a luminance threshold value is extended (step S13). The luminance Y of the original image obtained in step S2 is adjusted to be contained in the extended luminance range [L", H"] obtained in step S13 and luminance conversion (luminance mapping) is performed (step S3). After this, a corrected image to be projected is generated (step S4).
