PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pulse transformer which can be miniaturized, while ensuring the withstand voltage characteristics, and to provide a high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device employing that pulse transformer, and an illuminator that utilizes it. SOLUTION: A secondary winding 25 is divided into a first secondary winding 25a and a second secondary winding 25b, which are laminated while sandwiching a primary winding 26 and wound. The first secondary winding 25a is wound around a bobbin starting from the side (D) connected to a high-pressure discharge lamp, the primary winding is laminated on the first secondary winding 25a, and then the second secondary winding 25b is wound thereon to end on the side (E) connected with the high-pressure discharge lamp. Since the secondary sets of winding 25a and 25b, in the vicinity of the primary winding 26, are arranged on the sides C and F opposite to the side connected with the high pressure discharge lamp, and the potential difference between these sets of winding is comparatively small, ample insulation and withstand voltage can be ensured.
