The method involves extracting fuel from a tank (1) for supply to an internal combustion chamber through a pipe system of an injection system (21). Water at pre-filtering or fine filtering arrangements (5, 17) is separated and collected in a collecting space (10). An outlet valve (27) arranged at an outlet opening of the space is opened for discharging water based on the collection of preset amount of water. The water is separated at the fine filter arrangement that is connected with a pressure side (13) of a fuel conveying pump (12), where a coalescer material is used for the separation. An independent claim is also included for a device for implementing a method for separating and discharging water contained in a liquid fuel.
