The method involves filling a sample (7) with a known volume and known mass in a test chamber (1). The chamber is closed in a gas-tight manner, and an internal pressure lying in the chamber is detected by a pressure sensor (5). An auxiliary body (6) with a known auxiliary volume is inserted into the chamber or removed from the chamber. A changed internal pressure is measured, and an unknown volume of the sample is determined by the gas pressures and the known volumes. A mass of a liquid portion of the sample and water content is determined.
