An apparatus and a method for inputting characters of a mobile terminal are provided to input a type of characters and position-fixed symbols and convert the position-fixed symbols into different types of characters while changing an input mode. An input unit(202) includes character keys for inputting characters and numbers and a position-fixed symbol key for detecting an input of a position-fixed symbol, and detects a key input. A display unit(204) outputs an inputted character and the position-fixed symbol. A symbol conversion unit(208) converts the position-fixed symbol into an inputted character and controls to output the converted character on the display unit. A character processing unit(206) receives a sentence including a type of characters inputted through the input unit and the position-fixed symbol and converts the position-fixed symbol into the received character by using the symbol conversion unit while changing an input mode for selecting types of character.
