A brake device of a hoist for an elevator, having a brake drum (1) formed on a rotating drive body for lifting and lowering the elevator, a stationary core (2) placed at the center of the brake drum (1) and having an electromagnetic coil (2a) and an attraction surface (2b) that are provided on each of the opposite sides of the core, movable cores (4) placed facing the attraction surfaces (2b) on the opposite sides of the stationary core (2), urged by urging springs (3) in the direction to the brake drum (1), attracted to the stationary core (2) by electromagnetic force of the electromagnetic coils (2a), and brake shoes (5) placed on the movable cores (4) so as to face the brake drum (1), and engagement means (6, 7) provided on the attraction surfaces (2b) and on the movable cores (4) facing the attraction surfaces (2b) of the stationary core (2), engaged with each other, and capable of moving the movable cores (4) along the rotation shaft of the brake drum (1) with the weight of the movable cores (4) supported by the stationary cores (2).
