PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling optically anisotropic properties utilizing swelling and shrinkage phenomena of a hydrogel being flexible and having satisfactory mechanical strength and processability, particularly a method for controlling optically anisotropic properties of stimulation-responsive materials such as sensors, displaying elements and retardation films utilized in many fields such as information materials, electronic materials and medical materials. SOLUTION: This controlling method is a method for controlling optically anisotropic properties of gel containing water in a three-dimensional network structure formed by compounding (A) a water-soluble organic polymer and (B) a layered clay mineral, by changing the water content of the gel while maintaining the gel state to change the birefringence.
