PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make reduction in size and weight compatible with image projection from a large screen to a small screen, and thereby to reduce power consumption. SOLUTION: A light source unit 101 which can be attached to/detached from a main body 103 is provided in addition to the light source unit 104 of an image projection device main body 103. When using the device as a mobile one or when observing an image by few people, the device is used by detaching the light source unit 101. When using the device in a conference room or when observing the image by many people, the device is used by connecting the light source unit 101. Light from the light source unit is transmitted through a reflection mirror 105, a condensing lens 106 and a polarizer 107, and made incident on a transmission type liquid crystal light valve 108. Liquid crystal is controlled according to an image signal, the image is formed by the change of polarized light, and an enlarged image is projected to a screen 112 by a projection lens 111.
