The display of front and rear running lights on a self-propelled rail vehicle or train is interconnected with a reversing gear or controller determining the direction of motion, so that the lights are automatically correctly displayed for the direction selected. Front headlights HF, rear headlights HR, a white front, left, side light FSW, a red, front, right side light FSR, a red, rear, left, sidelight RSR and a white, rear, right, side light RSW are automatically correctly illuminated in accordance with the direction of motion of a diesel locomotive, by means of a member S whose movement depends on a selector shaft of a reversing gear-box between the locomotive's engine and wheels and thus operates two switches HS and SS. These switches, which may be microswitches where the movement of the selector shaft is effected by a pair of opposed pneumatic or hydraulic rams, are arranged so that their switching member is biased so that the contact nearest the member S is normally closed. Current is fed which further switches HL and SL respectively, which are in the overriding manual control of the driver. Two indicating lights IF and IR controlled by to additional switches FS and RS, which may be integral with switches HS and RS, and also operated by the member S, are extinguished when the member is in an intermediate position but indicate to the driver when the reversing gear is " fully home," in its forward or reverse position respectively. Instead of switching the running lights, the system described may be arranged to control the movement of red screens into and out of their light path. The switches HS, SS, FS and RS may be controlled mechanically by the valve linkage of a steam locomotive or the driver actuated linkage controlling the motors of one which is electrically propelled. Where a train comprises more than one unit, the switching system may control the running lights at its two ends. Specification 903,498 is referred to. |
