<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To verify a data storage device through a network before the data storage device can be operated. <P>SOLUTION: The data storage device 100 has a magnetic disk 105, a head assembly having a read/write head 108 reading data from the magnetic disk and writing data on the magnetic disk, and a controller 150 configured to control the head assembly to read data from the magnetic disk and to write data on the magnetic disk. The data storage device includes a magnetic disk protective area having a private key. The private key is one of a pair of cryptographically linked keys, and the other of the cryptographically linked keys is a public key.
