The device has a gearshift lever (4) with two digital switches (1, 2) for detecting neutral-position of the gearshift lever such that malfunction is detected. The switches detect different gearshift level positions, which exceed allowable tolerance. The switches are integrated in a dual sensor (3). The switches are assigned to characteristics that are provided in a control unit for evaluating sensor signals. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a switching device.
