An inlet manifold system for an IC engine with direct fuel injection has an intermediate manifold bolted to the cylinder head and with mountings to hold the injectors (6). Each of the injectors is aligned with a direct feed into the particular cylinder. The intermediate manifold has inlet ports and a fuel distribution duct (13) that feeds each injector mounting. The manifold includes water cooling ducts that connect to the cylinder head cooling. The inlet system is completed by fitting an inlet manifold to the outer ports of the intermediate manifold.
