A display apparatus and a display controlling method are provided to enhance image quality by suppressing brightness reduction of display brightness below a predetermined value. A backlight unit(12) has plural beam sources corresponding to plural display areas. A panel(11), which has plural pixels corresponding to the display areas, varies beam transmittance for every pixel. A panel controlling unit(131) sets individually emission brightness from the beam sources based on images signals and beam transmittance of the pixels corresponding to the emission brightness. A memory(14) stores a nonlinear conversion table for converting the emission brightness into beam source control values for the backlight. A backlight controller(33) converts the emission brightness into the beam source control values and supplies the beam source control values to the backlight based on the nonlinear conversion table.
