PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vinyl copolymer capable of producing a pigment dispersion excellent in dispersibility, fluidity and storage stability, to provide a method for producing the vinyl copolymer, and to provide a pigment composition using the vinyl copolymer. SOLUTION: The vinyl copolymer contains acid groups in such an amount as to be 0.3-4.0 on average per molecule. This vinyl copolymer is obtained by reaction between the hydroxy group in a hydroxyl-containing vinyl polymer(c) obtained by living polymerization between a hydroxyl-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomer(a) and another ethylenially unsaturated monomer(b) and the hydroxyl-reactive functional group in at least one compound selected from a compound(d) having hydroxyl-reactive functional group and acid group, carboxylic acid anhydride(e), polyphosphoric acid compound(f) and sultone compound(g).
