PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heart rate detector to accurately detect human heart rate within a short time. SOLUTION: The heart rate detector has the process of calculating the areas Sa, Sb, Sc to Si enclosed by the signal waveform and time axis of vibrating pressures caused by human heart rate, the process of comparing the sizes of adjoining areas Sa, Sb, Sc, to Si on the time axis to determine the maximized area Si, the process of calculating the gravity position tn of the maximized area Si, and the process of calculating the heart rate from a time interval between adjacent gravity positions tn and tn-1 on the time axis. So the device can accurately detect the heart rate within a short time without being affected by pressure signal strength changes caused by the physique and its position. If the device is used to detect the heart rate of an automobile driver, it becomes possible that if the driver's heart rate is unusually high, the device determines it is hot and automatically drops the air-conditioner's set temperature, and if his heart rate is low, the device determines that his awakening is deteriorated and issues an alarm.
