A search method and apparatus for a database are disclosed. The search apparatus includes a database for storing records having n searchable fields, a display unit for displaying one or more input boxes according to the number of input characters, a key input unit for inputting a character or a command to erase an already input character, and a controller for controlling the number and states of input boxes to be displayed through the display unit, and for generating a query to retrieve desired records from the database. As a result, n separate input boxes , are displayed according to the number of input characters. Effective search results can be produced with a reduced number of input characters.
