The operating process for a washing machine (1) involves activating the emptying pump (4) to pump a filling out of a container (2), and then deactivating it when a first pump level (N1 A>US, N0 U>NT) is reached or after a set time. This cycle is repeated which a critical operating condition is predicted, but failure is only detected when the critical state is reached again after at least one such cycle.
