Tilt steering mechanism

A steering apparatus for a vehicle includes a housing (20) with a steering shaft having a longitudinal axis. A first bearing (64) is interposed between the shaft and the housing (20), permitting rotation of the steering shaft about the axis. There is also a first wedge-shaped member (72) that has a thin end against the first bearing (64) and a means (90,92) for biasing the first wedge-shaped member (72) against the first bearing (64) to take up play between the shaft and first bearing (64), and play within the first bearing (64).
