[Also in Group XXII] A slide for machine tools is provided with recirculating roller assemblies which are movable from a retracted position in which they do not carry any weight into an operative position in which they carry some, or all, of the weight of the slide and a workpiece supported thereby. A compound slide arrangement comprises a base 10, Fig. 1, with two parallel guide surfaces 11 on its upper surface. Tracks 12 are provided adjacent each of these guides and, between the tracks are vertical guide surfaces 13. A first slide 14 is mounted on the base in frictional engagement with the guides 11 and is provided with gibs 15 fitted with recirculating roller assemblies. The slide 14 is also provided with holding-down strips 16 having means operable by hydraulic pressure to clamp the slide to the base. The slide 14 is lifted, to facilitate movement, by four recirculating roller assemblies 19, Fig. 4, each carried by a piston 23 in a cylinder 24 and running on the tracks 12. Oil pressure is supplied to the tops of the cylinders when the rollers are required to be brought into use. |
