A chuck comprises a bevelled collet 5 having a threaded portion 6 to receive the upper end of a tool 7, the collet having driving engagement with a correspondingly tapered sleeve 10 surrounding it, so that, if the tool tends to turn, it causes tightening of the collet and sleeve within the chuck. The driving engagement comprises projections 19 engaging slots in the sleeve 10. The inner end of the tool is engaged by a centre 21. The tool can be released by applying a spanner to the end 15 of the sleeve 10. |
