A method and an apparatus for adjusting the white balance of an image display device are provided to adjust the white balance of a region where a load of a moving picture is concentrated and distributed according to a picture load. An image mode detecting unit(20) detects an image mode according to a picture load. A load pattern selecting unit(21) selects a picture load pattern according to the image mode. A white balance detecting unit(22) measures white balance in N gray levels. An RGB gain adjusting unit(23) corrects an RGB gain according to the measured white balance. A gain table setting and gain adjusting unit(25) sets the corrected gain table and adjusts the RGB gain.
