A gas monitoring system (1) utilizes I.R absorbing properties of gas and comprises a control unit (2), with at least one laser (6A, 6B, 6C) and control means (7A, 7B, 7C) to emit radiation appropriate to the target gas. Fibre optic cabling (8A, 8B, 8C) extends from the lasers (6A, 6B, 6C) to an optical beam splitter (9). A corresponding plurality of fibre optic cables (10A, 10B, 10C) extend from the beam splitter (9) to each measurement cell (4A, 4B, 4C) and a photo detector (21A, 21B, 21C) is provided for each measurement cell. The detectors are connected to the cells by fibre optic cabling. A fibre optic cable extends from the optical beam splitter (9) to a photo detector to provide a light reference point. The system provides an alarm indicative of gas leaks etc. The use of optical fibers reduces the possibility of igniting the gas. |
