In a vehicle wheel-mounting assembly a ball-joint comprises an open-ended socket mounted on a part of the assembly and an adjustably positionable plug having a seating surface which exerts a thrust on the ball head, the plug being maintained in adjustment by a screw-threaded thrust means which extends outwardly through the closure at the end of the socket and is formed with tool-engaging surfaces, a locking nut being provided on the thrust means outside the socket to bear upon the closure. In the ball joint shown in Fig. 1, a cylindrical socket 14 is secured to a control arm 23 by means of integral lugs 22 and contains a wear ring 18 mating with a part-spherical bearing member 19 for the stud 20. A plug 26 mating with the part spherical stud head 21, has screw-threaded engagement with the socket 14 and is formed with an integral screw-threaded extension 30 which extends out of the socket and carries a lock nut 34 by means of which the plug may be secured in its adjusted position. A non-circular passage 31 is formed through the plug and extension for engagement by an adjusting tool, and serves also as a lubricant channel, a lubricant fitting 32 being provided. Alternatively, the lubricant fitting may be located in the position 32a. Lubricant passages 28 are also formed through the plug 26. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the socket 14 is externally threaded and is screwed into a receiving eye in the control arm 23, a separate plate-like closure being provided over the open end of the socket for engagement by the lock nut 34, and in a further modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the stud has a part spherical head in engagement with the wear ring 18, and a part spherical bearing member is disposed on a trunnion projecting from the plane diametrical face of the head and mates with the plug 26, a wear cap being disposed between the bearing member and the head. In the ball joint shown in Fig. 7, the stud head 43a is formed with a part-spherical socket 76 to receive the complementary end of an adjustable plug 78 which is threadedly mounted in a socket closure plate 79 threaded into the bore of the socket and is locked by a nut 51. In Fig. 9 socket 84 and the closure 92 have flanges 85, 93 for attachment to the control arm 23b and the stud head 91 mates with a laterally and axially movable plug 95 abutting a thrust means 97. An antifriction bearing 90 is interposed between the stud head 91 and a pressedmetal bearing block 89. In a modification (Fig. 11, not shown), a stud, wear ring and partspherical bearing member similar to those of Fig. 1 are included in an externally-threaded cylindrical socket screwed into a bearing eye in a control arm and are adjusted by a plug and thrust means similar to those of Fig 9. |
