An apparatus and a method for searching channels in an image display device are provided to search the channel by using residual power maintained for a preset time if a power off command is inputted so that auto channel searching can be performed. A tuner(130) tunes a channel through which an actual effective signal is inputted among broadcasting signals inputted from the outside. A memory unit(140) stores information about the channel tuned by the tuner. A power unit(120) supplies power to each unit of an image display device. A key input unit(110) is for inputting a request command of a user. If a power off command is inputted through the key input unit, a controller(170) performs a control operation to perform channel searching except channel information pre-stored in the memory for a preset time through the tuner. The controller controls entire channel searching processes.
