An apparatus and a method for changing a screen image of a mobile terminal are provided to change the direction of a screen image displayed on a display unit simply and conveniently without additionally inputting a particular key. A mobile terminal is in a standby mode or in a supplementary function execution mode(S301). When an input of an arbitrary event is sensed(S303), it is checked whether the event is a touch event for changing a user mode to change the direction of a screen image(S305). When the event is a touch event, a controller determines accordingly(S309). A current user mode is changed according to the touch event and a current direction of a screen image is changed according to the changed user mode(S311). The controller displays a corresponding screen image according to the standby mode or the supplementary function execution mode based on the changed direction of the screen image(S313).
