A lift installation with braking equipment and a method of braking in a lift installation are provided to improve a braking method and a maintaining method of a lift cage in order to lengthen a lifetime of the lift cage. Lift equipment includes a lift cage(3). The lift equipment is moved in a vertical direction along a guiding track(7). The lift equipment is stopped by using a braking device. The braking device includes two or more braking units(12). Each of the braking units includes brake linings(14,15) which interact with a braking track(8). One of the braking units includes an abrasion compensation unit(30) for setting a clearance between the brake linings and the braking track in a releasing state thereof. The clearance is set as a constant value.
