917,679. Reverse gear. BROWN INDUSTRIES Ltd., DAVID. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 27, 1960], No. 6939/60. Class 80 (2). An epicyclic reversing gear comprises a single disc clutch 12 for forward drive and a twin-discbrake 19 for reverse, associated with the input shaft 10 of a change-speed gear-box, the clutch and brake both being oil-immersed so that when they are disengaged prior to gear-changing the fluid drag on the discs causes a rapid slowing down of the shaft 10. As shown the epicyclic unit comprises stepped planets 16, 17 carried by the clutch-plate 15 and meshing with sunwheels 14, 18, respectively, integral with, and freely mounted on, shaft 10. For forward drive clutch 13 is engaged and the planets 16 17 locked solid to connect shaft 10 with a fly-, wheel 11, while for reverse the planets are released and brake 19 engaged to hold the sunwheel 18. When the gear is disengaged the brake drag torque being greater than that of the clutch effects a rapid slowing down, but not reversal, of shaft 10, thereby facilitating gear change.
