An ink jet recording head and an ink jet recording apparatus are provided to reduce the size of the ink jet recording apparatus by reducing the volume of a waste ink absorbing member. An ink jet recording head comprises a first ink passage which is connected to an ink feed hole(5), a second ink passage which is divided at a division part of the first ink passage and connected to an ink discharge hole, and a third ink passage which is connected between the division part and the outside. The second ink passage has an opening at the division part such that the opening does not cross the center line of the first ink passage. The first and second ink passages have a linear shape and extend vertically when the recording head is directed vertically downward.
