[Also in Division B5] In the manufacture of a shoe comprising an upper 18 and a moulded sole 10, the sole having a feather edge 20 and a relatively thick tread portion 16, and the lasting margin 22 of the upper being bonded at the shoulder in a depressed portion of the upper surface at the feather edge, the upper is supported on a last 26 having a recess 30 in its bottom inwardly of the shoulder 32, and adapted to be held against the rim of the mould, the bottom 38 of the mould being movable relative to the last and being upwardly curved at its edges. Preferably the whole of the upper surface 40 of the bottom 38 is slightly concave. A sole blank is placed in the mould cavity 36, and the mould bottom is moved upwardly, with or without heat, to plasticize the blank and force it into contact with the lasting margin and into the recess 30. The upper may be string or slip lasted. An injection mould may be used in place of the 3-part mould. Specification 763,847 is referred to. |
