Heterocyclic-substituted tricyclic thrombin receptor antagonists of formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, as well as pharmaceutical compositions containing them are disclosed, wherein the variables/substituents are as defined in the specification. These tricyclic compounds are suitable for treating diseases associated with thrombosis, atherosclerosis, restenosis, hypertension, angina pectoris, arrhythmia, heart failure, and cancer.
