Disclosed is a water-insoluble polymeric medium having a plurality of polymerized N-pyridinium vinylbenzyl triiodide or tribromide moieties whose pyridinium rings bear two substituents, R1 and R2, that are independently a hydrido or alkyl group, said polymerized N-pyridinium vinylbenzyl triiodide or tribromide moieties corresponding in structure to the formula shown. Also disclosed is the use of the above polymer for the treatment of water.
