A portable data storage device has a non-volatile memory (3) for storing user data, an interface section (7) for receiving and transmitting data to a host, and a master control unit (1) for transferring data to and from the non-volatile memory (3). The portable data storage device further includes an integrated circuit (13) for generating at least one key. The portable data storage device is arranged, upon receiving a command from a host requesting data, to transmit the requested data stored in its memory to the host using the interface section and to transmit at least one of the keys generated by the integrated circuit means to the host using the interface section. The device is further arranged to generate and transmit to the host or to receive from the host a digital signature using the generated key and the requested data for use in verifying that the requested data has been correctly received by the host.
