The X-ray unit has a X-ray emitter with an anode (5), which emits x-ray. A cathode (11) emits electrons during radiation by using a laser beam (19). A vacuum housing (1) is rotatable about an axis (3) by using a rotating unit, where an insulator separates the cathode from the anode. An optical unit adjusts and focuses the laser beam obtained from the radiation source on a stationary laser focal spot on the cathode. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an x-ray unit.
